Hi.

Welcome to my blog. I document my adventures as I travel around the UK and in Europe

Swansea Cathedral

Swansea Cathedral

Cathedral Church of Saint Joseph

Unlike other Welsh cities like Cardiff and Newport, Swansea does not have an Anglican cathedral. The cathedral in Swansea is the Cathedral Church of Saint Joseph, which serves the Roman Catholic community.

Here are some pictures of the cathedral.

Here is a brief overview:

  • History: The church was founded in the late 19th century to serve the large number of Irish immigrants who had settled in Swansea. It was designed by architect Peter Paul Pugin and opened in 1888. The building was not originally a cathedral but was elevated to that status in 1987, when the Diocese of Menevia was created. In 2024, the dioceses of Cardiff and Menevia were merged, and St Joseph's became the co-cathedral of the new Archdiocese of Cardiff-Menevia.

  • Architecture: St Joseph's is a fine example of the late-19th-century Gothic Revival style. It is built from bull-nosed masonry with Bath stone dressings and features a distinctive polygonal tower and spire in the northwest corner. The interior is noted for its high ceilings with radiating ribs and its use of red Dumfries stone in the nave piers.

  • Significance: The cathedral is a key landmark in Swansea and an important symbol of the city's Catholic faith. It is a Grade II listed building, recognizing its architectural and historical value.
